What is the International Foundation Year (IFY)?

It bridges the gap between secondary education and university by combining subject-specific knowledge, academic English, research and study skills, and structured preparation for independent learning. At UFC, students complete a coherent programme rather than a collection of separate courses. The aim is to ensure that students arrive at university with the academic confidence, communication skills and study habits needed to succeed.

What makes the IFY at University Foundation Centre different?

UFC combines the NCUK International Foundation Year curriculum with close academic guidance, English for Academic Purposes, university application support, personal development, civic engagement and the Eight Traits for Success. Students study in small cohorts at our campus in Waterloo, Belgium. The programme is designed as a purposeful transition into university and supports students academically while developing confidence, independence, critical thinking, communication and responsible decision-making.

Why is the International Foundation Year needed?

Not every capable student is best served by a direct transition from secondary school to university. Some students change education systems, join an international school late, need more time to develop academic English, do not reach the required IB or A-Level result, or discover that their previous route did not match their strengths. The IFY offers these students a structured and academically demanding alternative. It closes specific gaps without lowering expectations and provides a clear route towards university study, provided students meet the score thresholds set by university partners.

Question 4

Is the IFY a remedial programme?

No. UFC is not a remedial provider. It is intended for students with genuine academic ability who would benefit from a more focused, supportive and internationally oriented transition to university. Students are expected to meet entry requirements, complete academic modules, develop university-level English and study skills, and achieve the grades required for progression. Support is provided to help students meet the standard, not remove the standard.

Question 5

Does the IFY replace or compete with IB, A Levels or other school qualifications?

Accepted Answer

No. The IFY complements established programmes such as IB and A Levels. These remain excellent routes for students who are ready and able to complete them successfully. The IFY serves a different cohort: students for whom the traditional route has become a barrier because of timing, language development, mobility, previous results or personal circumstances. It gives schools and families an additional pathway without reducing the value of existing qualifications.

Who is the IFY suitable for?

The programme is suitable for students who have studied for Jury Central, IGCSE, MYP, IB or A Levels and need a different route to university. It may also suit students who intend to study at English-speaking universities, particularly in the UK, Australia, Canada or the USA; students who have changed education systems; students who need to strengthen their academic English; or students who have underperformed in a previous qualification but retain clear academic potential. Admission is based on eligibility, readiness and the fit between the student’s goals and the programme. UFC will not recommend enrolment where the IFY is not the appropriate route.

Is the IFY internationally recognised?

Yes. The International Foundation Year is awarded by NCUK and is recognised by 80+ NCUK University Partners across the UK, Australia, New Zealand, the USA, Canada and other destinations. It has been developed to prepare students for entry into undergraduate study and is accepted by partner universities as a formal progression qualification. Universities outside the NCUK partner network may also consider the qualification, but progression outside the network cannot be guaranteed and should be checked individually.

What does “guaranteed university progression” mean?

Guaranteed progression is earned, not automatic. Students who successfully complete the NCUK pathway, meet the academic and English-language requirements for an eligible course, and submit their university applications through the NCUK process are guaranteed an offer from an NCUK University Partner, subject to NCUK’s guarantee terms. The guarantee does not mean unconditional entry to any university or any degree. Different universities and degree programmes set different grade, subject and English requirements, and the final offer may not be from the student’s first-choice university.

Does guaranteed progression lower university entry standards?

No. NCUK University Partners set the academic and English requirements for their degree programmes. Students must meet those requirements through a rigorous programme of subject study, assessment and academic English preparation. The guarantee is best understood as a pre-agreed progression pathway. Students know that meeting the published conditions will be recognised, but they do not bypass the standard.

How is the IFY assessed?

The IFY is a 120-credit academic programme assessed through a combination of coursework and examinations in accordance with the requirements of each module. Students study three subject modules alongside English for Academic Purposes and a compulsory skills-based module. Assessment tests subject knowledge, analysis, communication, application and readiness for university-level study. Students must meet the required standards in their academic modules and English component to complete the programme and progress to university. UFC will explain the assessment calendar, grading and progression requirements during enrolment and induction.

Which universities can students progress to?

Successful students can apply to degree programmes across the NCUK University network, which comprises 80+ partners based in the UK, Australia, New Zealand, the USA and Canada. The available choices depend on the student’s subject pathway, IFY grades, English result, previous academic background and the entry requirements of the selected degree.

What degree subjects can students study after the IFY?

Degree options depend on the modules studied and the university’s requirements. UFC’s business-focused pathway can support progression towards areas such as Business, International Business, Management, Finance, Accounting, Economics, Marketing, Entrepreneurship and related social sciences. Science and healthcare-related pathways may support progression towards subjects such as Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Physical Sciences, Computer Science and selected healthcare or medicine-related routes. Medicine is highly competitive and subject to specific academic, admissions and university requirements; it should never be presented as automatic progression.

Will UFC help students with university applications?

Yes. University guidance is integrated into the IFY. Students receive support in researching degree options, understanding entry requirements, selecting appropriate universities and preparing their applications. They also take part in academic, professional and super-curricular activities that can help them explain their interests, skills and readiness for further study. The objective is to help each student make informed choices.

What subjects can students study at UFC?

UFC’s planned business pathway includes subjects such as Business Studies, Economics, Integrated Maths, and Business and Global Studies. Subject options for science and healthcare-related progression may include Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics, with other modules considered according to demand, staffing, NCUK approval and the intended university route. English for Academic Purposes and the skills-based module are compulsory components of the programme. Final subject combinations are confirmed with students according to pathway requirements and availability.

What is included in the programme structure?

The IFY has a 120-credit structure. Students study three subject modules alongside English for Academic Purposes and a compulsory skills-based module. The programme combines approximately 540 guided learning hours with 660 hours of independent study, giving a total of around 1,200 learning hours. Students are assessed through a mixture of coursework and examinations. The exact balance depends on the module specifications.

How long does the programme take?

The standard programme runs for one academic year from September, normally over 30 teaching weeks divided into two semesters. UFC also offers an accelerated six-month option starting in January, subject to cohort viability and final programme arrangements. Students and families should discuss the most suitable format with UFC before registration, as not every format may be available for every pathway or intake.

What does the weekly timetable look like?

The sample timetable combines subject modules, English for Academic Purposes, academic rehearsal, sport, service activities, breaks and a consistent daily routine. A typical day begins with arrival and a short warm-up period, followed by two subject blocks, lunch, EAP and an afternoon rehearsal, sport or project session. The published timetable is illustrative. The final schedule may vary according to pathway, cohort needs, staffing, subject choices and the calendar of seminars or community projects.

Why is English for Academic Purposes compulsory?

Academic English is a university-readiness skill, not a sign of low ability. Success at an English-speaking university requires students to read critically, write clearly, participate in seminars, deliver presentations, understand academic conventions and communicate confidently within their discipline. The EAP module develops reading, writing, speaking and listening for academic contexts. NCUK University Partners accept the relevant EAP result in place of IELTS for progression, subject to the requirements of the selected university and programme.

What civic engagement and professional activities are included?

UFC plans seminars and projects that connect academic learning with society, citizenship and the professional world. Topics may include artificial intelligence, the history of civilisation, ethics, equity, justice and inclusion. Business talks may bring local entrepreneurs, professionals and industry specialists into contact with students. Students may also take part in team-building, charity or community projects and a graduation project involving hands-on practitioners. Activities will vary by term and availability but focus on developing the Eight Traits: intellectual curiosity, self-motivation, independent learning, a positive outlook, confidence to ask questions, critical thinking, leadership potential and self-reflection.

What support is available for students with additional needs?

UFC aims to provide close guidance through small cohorts, structured routines and individual attention. Where a student has a special educational need or other support requirement, the centre will discuss reasonable SEND support arrangements with the student and family before enrolment to determine what additional support is needed to study the IFY. Support must be appropriate to the programme and available resources, and it cannot remove the academic requirements of the IFY. Families should disclose relevant needs early so that suitability and support can be considered responsibly.

What are the entry requirements?

Applicants must meet the academic entry requirements for the NCUK International Foundation Year and demonstrate English ability at approximately IELTS 5.0 or an accepted equivalent. NCUK’s general academic criteria include completion of an appropriate secondary qualification. UFC will review each applicant’s educational background, English level, chosen pathway and readiness for the programme. Meeting the minimum entry criteria does not remove the need for a suitability review.

Where will students study?

Students will study at University Foundation Centre based at the Château d’Argenteuil estate, Square d’Argenteuil 5, 1410 Waterloo, Belgium. The setting includes woodland and landscaped grounds, with access to facilities such as a sports hall, football field and tennis court. The campus provides a distinctive environment close to Brussels while allowing many Belgium-based students to remain near their families before progressing overseas.

How will student progress be monitored and reported?

UFC is committed to monitoring progress from enrolment through programme completion and university application. Students receive feedback on academic performance, English development, attendance, engagement and readiness for progression. Where appropriate and subject to privacy requirements, families and partner schools can receive structured progress updates. UFC also intends to follow graduate progression where possible so that the programme can be evaluated by what students achieve, not merely by enrolment numbers.

When does the programme start and how can students apply?

UFC’s inaugural intake is planned to begin on 7 September 2026 or 8 January 2027. Prospective students and families can register their interest through the UFC website and will then be guided through eligibility, subject choices, supporting documents and registration. Early enquiries are encouraged because pathway planning, English assessment and university goals may affect the appropriate subject combination and study format.

How much does the IFY cost?

Tuition for the September 2026 intake is €25,000. The final published fee should state clearly what is included, whether a deposit is required, the payment schedule, any additional NCUK or assessment charges, and the applicable withdrawal and refund conditions. The cost should be considered in the context of the complete programme: subject teaching, English for Academic Purposes, skills development, university application guidance, personal development and wider student support. For families already based in Belgium, studying the foundation year in Waterloo may also allow the student to remain at home before progressing abroad, potentially reducing one year of overseas accommodation, travel and living costs. Individual savings will vary and should not be guaranteed.

What is included in the tuition fee?

The fee includes subject-module teaching, English for Academic Purposes, the skills-based module, assessment, university guidance, student-development activities and access to agreed campus facilities. The fee does not include books, optional trips, resits, external examinations, transport, meals or specialist application costs. Transparent fee information allows families to compare the full educational package rather than consider the tuition figure in isolation.
